How similar are shared syntactic representations? Evidence from priming of passives in Greek–English bilinguals

چکیده

Abstract The shared-syntax account of bilingual syntactic representations suggests that similar structures from different languages are represented as one in the mind. In this study, we examined degree morpho-syntactic similarity needed for to be shared mind by comparing passive Greek and English. Contrary English, non-active morphology is not restricted passives “by phrase” considered marked. two structural priming experiments, whether can primed L1-Greek and, subsequently, there a single representation Greek–English bilinguals despite distributional differences. Results showed were (Experiment 1) L2-English 2). Our findings suggest differences inherent do prevent priming, even when featural structure identical.

Shared syntactic representations in bilinguals: Evidence for the role of word-order repetition.

Studies on syntactic priming strongly suggest that bilinguals can store a single integrated representation of constructions that are similar in both languages (e.g., Spanish and English passives; R. J. Hartsuiker, M. J. Pickering, & E. Veltkamp, 2004). However, they may store 2 separate representations of constructions that involve different word orders (e.g., German and English passives; H. Lo...

Syntactic priming in German-English bilinguals during sentence comprehension

A longstanding question in bilingualism is whether syntactic information is shared between the two language processing systems. We used an fMRI repetition suppression paradigm to investigate syntactic priming in reading comprehension in German-English late-acquisition bilinguals. In comparison to conventional subtraction analyses in bilingual experiments, repetition suppression has the advantag...

A Paradox of Syntactic Priming: Why Response Tendencies Show Priming for Passives, and Response Latencies Show Priming for Actives

Speakers tend to repeat syntactic structures across sentences, a phenomenon called syntactic priming. Although it has been suggested that repeating syntactic structures should result in speeded responses, previous research has focused on effects in response tendencies. We investigated syntactic priming effects simultaneously in response tendencies and response latencies for active and passive t...

Repetition priming in picture naming and translation depends on shared processes and their difficulty: evidence from spanish-english bilinguals.

Two experiments with highly fluent Spanish-English bilinguals examined repetition priming of picture identification and word retrieval in picture naming. In Experiment 1, between-language priming of picture naming was symmetric, but within-language priming was stronger in the nondominant language. In Experiment 2, priming between picture naming and translation was symmetric within both the domi...

Cross-script phonological priming for Japanese-English bilinguals: Evidence for integrated phonological representations

Previous masked phonological priming studies with bilinguals whose languages are written in the same script (e.g., Dutch-French bilinguals) strongly suggest that phonological representations for the two languages are integrated, based on the fact that phonological activation created by reading a word in one language facilitates word identification in the other language. The present research exa...
